With the internet we have at our fingertips it is VERY easy to get educated on these natural methods of gardening. I highly recommend learning organic & natural gardening methods to be good stewards of the land entrusted to our care. This is harmful both short-term & long-term to people and animals as well. When we use man-made chemicals in our gardens we hurt the beneficial insects (including bees, which we need for pollination & honey, etc.) & all those chemicals DO end up going into the ground & possibly the ground-water, streams, rivers, lakes & oceans eventually. Perhaps many people already know this fact but for the new gardener or one who is accustomed to using chemical pesticides and herbicides this is a good thing to know. ![]() So instead of the pesky pests eating up your garden & your food the good bugs will be dining on them instead :) These beneficial insects love to eat things like aphids & other plant devourers. when you plant herbs & flowers near to your vegetable plants you will be attracting insects like lady bugs, praying mantis, lacewings, soldier beetles, etc. I've never worried myself about the self-seeding because the seedlings that pop up the following year are easy to pluck up if I don't want too many - but they produce such gorgeous plants I often transplant them to pots and give to friends & family.Īttracting bees, hummingbirds, butterflies and all sorts of beneficial insects to your garden.ĭid you know that drawing beneficial insects to your garden with various flowers & herbs is a natural & non-harmful way to keep "bad" bugs at bay? The flowers are followed by seed pods which, if not gathered prior to opening, will self-seed. You can expect the flowers to continue for at least 3 weeks and often longer (ours lasted in our area about two months!) in Spring to Summer. These plants don't require a lot of watering but they do like well-drained soil in sunny spots.Įasy to grow, easy to maintain, beautiful to behold! ![]() Some of my customers have purchased the seeds for medicinal value but I would recommend you do your own research as I am not an expert and cannot provide guidance here. However, when I researched the Federal database I found no restrictions for other states. PLEASE NOTE: In Oregon and Hawaii these plants are categorized as noxious weeds therefore I will not ship Spanish Broom to Oregon or Hawaii. At first glance they appeared dead but a closer look revealed they were simply intoxicated with the nectar & would stay inside the blossoms for extended periods of time :) Last year we observed many of the fatter bumble bees sometimes literally "drunk" inside the blooms. One wonderful feature of this plant is that the blooms are abundant and the blooming time stretches over a period of up to 2-3 months!īees, hummingbirds & butterflies LOVE them. These seeds will produce gorgeous plants with long-lasting "sweet-pea" type blooms and incredibly fragrant perfume! We use no pesticides or herbicides (ie, "round-up") in our garden. ![]() Heirloom seeds I harvested and sorted from our own gorgeous, mature, healthy spanish broom plants here in Central California. ![]() Please visit my Shop NewShir for other delights: ![]()
